You’ve probably heard the expression, “I’d rather get a root canal!” Root canal therapy certainly has a bad reputation, but at LuxSmile Family Dentistry of Carrollton, you don’t have to be afraid of it. The truth is that root canal therapy actually helps to relieve pain and save your natural tooth, unlike the alternative of extracting it completely. Root canals are a good thing! And what’s more, our patients often comment on Dr. Tammy Ton’s gentle touch, which puts them at ease and makes any treatment much more pleasant.
This procedure addresses decay that has penetrated deeper into the tooth to the inner layers, the dentin, and the pulp, where the nerves are located. When this happens, you can feel increased sensitivity or pain. Root canal therapy addresses the cause of that pain and restores your tooth to full health so that you can avoid more drastic measures.
Chances are that you’ll find out that you need root canal therapy in one of two ways: Dr. Ton identifies the tooth decay in your dental exam or you experience a severe toothache. In each appointment with every patient, Dr. Ton is honest about her findings and only suggests treatment that is necessary. As a result, you know you can trust her assessments and rest easy that your dental health is in experienced, gentle hands.
A root canal starts out much like addressing a normal cavity. Dr. Ton will numb the area with a local anesthetic, relieving any pain you may be experiencing. In fact, for many patients that is the most unpleasant part of the procedure itself! Using special tools, she will remove the infected area in the dentin and pulp and clean it to ensure all bacteria are gone. Then, she will use a biocompatible material to seal the tooth. If you need a dental crown, you’ll wear a temporary one until your custom-made, personalized crown is ready. We use only the best materials that will improve your tooth’s function and preserve its structure.
Although some tenderness or mild pain is normal, it should subside within a few days. To avoid increasing this pain, avoid using that tooth for chewing or choose softer foods for 24 hours afterward. Caring for your tooth afterward resembles caring for your other teeth: brushing twice daily and flossing once daily.
